Entrance to Major

Students are first admitted to the college that offers their intended major in pre-major status. They formally declare their major in the spring of their sophomore year through the Entrance to Major process (ETM).

Degree programs leading to teacher certification are controlled majors. This means that certain requirements must be fulfilled during the first three or four semesters of study before formal admission to the certification program in the junior year.

For teacher certification programs, the requirements fall into these general categories:

By the end of the third semester (semester prior to ETM semester):

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Passing scores on the three PPST tests in the PRAXIS series English 15 or 30
  • Documentation of 80 hours of work experience with children

By the end of the fourth semester (the ETM semester):

  • 3 credits of literature
  • 48 credits minimum
  • The early field experience course specified by their intended major
  • Education core courses (see checksheet)
  • Additional required courses (see checksheet)

For teacher certification majors, the ETM process occurs only in the spring.  Students have only one opportunity to apply for entrance to teacher certification majors. Each student’s ETM semester is indicated on his or her academic summary, available through eLion. Under certain circumstances (e.g., part-time study), students may request to have their ETM semester changed. Students should work closely with their advisors to prepare for the ETM process.

More information about some ETM requirements is available by clicking the links on the left.
