Job Market

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for elementary and secondary school teachers is expected to increase at about the average rate for all professions until about 2010, when increased retirements should create many job openings.

There is already an increased market for teachers in California, Texas, Arizona, and Georgia.  There is also a high demand for teachers in:

  • urban areas
  • rural areas
  • mathematics
  • chemistry
  • physics
  • bilingual education
  • foreign languages
  • computer science
  • special education

There is currently an adequate supply of teachers in the following specialties:

  • general elementary education (except in certain geographic regions)
  • physical education
  • social studies
