PRAXIS

The PRAXIS is a series of tests administered by the Educational Testing Service. The entire series comprises three levels:

  • Pre-professional level, for entrance to a teacher preparation program. Passing these tests indicates that the student has mastered basic skills. These are the tests that Penn State students must pass to be eligible for Entrance to the Major.
  • Certification level, for state certification. Penn State students take the tests at this level when they are close to graduation.
  • Beginning professional level, for evaluation of teacher performance.

Penn State students should take the PPST (Pre-professional tests) prior to the end of their third semester. These are standardized tests administered six times a year at various locations throughout the country. (They are usually administered at University Park.) Scores should be sent right to Penn State. Passing scores must be on file for successful Entrance to the Major.

The PPST has three parts—reading, writing, and mathematics. Each part takes one hour. It is a good idea to take the tests late in the freshman year in case one or more parts has to be re-taken.

Students may register and access information and practice tests from the PRAXIS web site.
