Internship
Panel:
Each fall semester the club hosts a lunch for
several agency representatives who are willing to mentor HDFS interns.
All campus students are invited to attend. After lunch the agency
representatives each speak about their organization, what they expect
interns to do, and what types of experiences the intern will have. An
opportunity for students to ask questions follows.
Each spring semester the club
hosts another luncheon internship panel, but instead of agency
professionals, there will be a panel of HDFS students who have already
completed their internship. They will talk about their experiences, how
they got the internship, what they liked, or didn't like, etc.
Skating/Bowling Party to benefit
Big Brothers/Big Sisters: Some semesters we sponsor a
skating or bowling party for the matches and "waiting littles" connected with the
Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. We provide the children with free
entertainment, some pizza and cookies, and a small gift. We have
coordinated this event for Clearfield County and for Jefferson County in
the past.
Agape Clothes Drive: The
club puts out collection boxes in several places on the Penn State DuBois Campus for people to donate used
clothing or household goods. Club members gather up the items and
take them to Agape
Community Services. The agency then distributes the items to needy
individuals free of charge.
Bowling for Kid's sake:
During the spring semester we often put
together a bowling team to help Big Brothers/Big Sisters raise money.
Anyone can sponsor HDFS students.
Faculty Activity Seminars: Periodically the Club sponsors a Faculty Activity
Seminar. The entire campus is invited to join the Club for
refreshments, after which an invited faculty/staff member will give a presentation about
his/her research or other scholarly activities.
Other Services: Every semester HDFS Club members also decide on
other services that they wish to provide. For example, in March 2002 we
put together and delivered 55 Easter baskets to residents of a local nursing
home. Members are welcomed and encouraged to come up with ideas for other
campus or community service projects.
Fundraisers
Periodically the club will hold a fundraiser to raise money to donate to
human service organizations, and to provide operating money for the
club. Some of the money raised is used for graduation parties for HDFS
students in December and May.
