Can you tell me more about Information Sciences and Technology (IST)?  

Information Sciences and Technology can refer to many computer technologies.  There are several areas that overlap with IST.  These include computer science, computer programming, computer network and telecommunication technology, database development, database management, Internet technologies, client/server and distributed systems.  IST deals with the design, development, application, integration, and evaluation of computer technology systems.  

 

 

What is the difference between IST and Computer Science?  

Computer science focuses on technical details more than the IST program.  Typical Computer Science coursework includes Calculus I, II, and III, Matrices, Physics I and II, Differential Equations, digital circuitry, introductory through advanced programming, assembly language, computer organization, compiler design, artificial intelligence, and operating systems.  Skills in Computer Science range from design of software and hardware at the bit and byte level to designing complex computer systems.

IST students are required to take courses in math, statistics, and programming languages.  The emphasis is more on solving problems at the application and systems level.

 

 

What types of companies hire IST graduates?  

IST students can find jobs in many types of industry, businesses, and government agencies.

 

 

What are the typical starting salaries for IST graduates?  

Salaries depend on the company you work for and the region you work in.  Other factors include responsibilities of the job and academic performance.  Most salaries start at $35,000 to $45,000 per year.

 

 

What are the different options within IST?  

The options within IST are:  Baccalaureate, Generalized Business, Software, Web Administration, Networking, Data/Information, Industrial/Manufacturing, Telecommunications, and Individualized.

Is it necessary for IST students to purchase a computer?  

Students are not required to purchase a computer to enroll in  IST.  There are labs available at Penn State DuBois for the students to use. 

 

 

Is computer experience a prerequisite for admission into the IST program?  

Computer experience is not required for admission to IST.  However, knowledge of basic computer concepts is advantageous to the student.
