Possible Club Activities
Charity
Boxes
These
boxes are designed to be collection sites for any unwanted or used
clothing/household goods that students would like to donate to
families in the area that may need them. Club members who
volunteer for to take care of these boxes are asked to advertise the
project on campus through flyers, list-serve e-mail, or word of
mouth. They also transport the contents of the boxes to the
drop-off site when needed. The charity is chosen by the officers of
the club. Possibilities include Agape, Salvation Army, or any other
identified place of need.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters Events
The
HDFS Club has hosted Big Brother/ Big Sister events in Clearfield
for the BB/BS of Clearfield County. We have enjoyed
different activities with them which have include skating and
bowling.
Internship Panel/ Internship Fair
Each year the HDFS Club
holds one internship seminar the Fall Semester and in the Spring
Semester, a panel of speakers that have either done an internship
for the HDFS major or different agencies that provide an internship
to HDFS majors.
Past speakers for this
event have come from Children's Aid Society, Clearfield/Jefferson
Drug and Alcohol Commission, Pentz Run, Cen-Clear, Du Bois Nursing
Home, and many more.
Faculty Activity Seminars
Each semester the HDFS
Club sponsors a Faculty Activity Seminar in which a chosen professor
is asked to speak about a topic relevant to HDFS students. Many
different aspects of the HDFS field are spoke about during these
events.
Past speakers have included
Dr. Pamela Hufnagel and her idea about the "Sophomore Slump",
Mr. William Allenbaugh speaking about "Sexual Predators", and
many others.
Head
start Day
The HDFS Club hosts
Head Start Day, where classes from the Clearfield County Head Start
are invited to campus for an afternoon full of fun activities!
During the Month of April we invited them for an afternoon of
story time, sidewalk chalk art, playing with a GIANT parachute, and
a group sing-a-long to end the day, along with making a craft.
We also provided snacks, drinks, and a coloring packet for the kids
to take home with them.
March of Dimes Walk/ Walk for
healthy babies
During the Spring Semester, club members formed a team that
participated in Walk for healthy babies. Members were able to
raise $250.00 for March of Dimes through club fundraising and
donations. Members then walked the five miles at the Du Bois
Middle School to show our support and Penn State Pride!!!
Thanksgiving
Luncheon
Club members gathered with HDFS Professors for a pot-luck luncheon!
It was a time to relax, chat, have fun, give thanks for a great
semester, and enhance our relationships with other club members and
professors.
Graduation Luncheon
Each Fall and Spring
Semester we host a luncheon to honor and celebrate our soon-to-be
graduates! Last year we chose to have a pot-luck where members
brought their favorite dishes! We had quite the spread!
Club Bulletin Board
Members volunteer to
decorate our HDFS Club bulletin board located in Swift. They
are responsible for keeping it up-to-date with minutes from the
meetings, sign-up rosters for events, flyers for events, event
pictures, and any other exciting news we may have to share! We
also like to keep the bulletin board in season... so if you like to
decorate this might be for you!
FUNDRAISERS!!!
In order to earn the money we need for all of the exciting events
listed above, we have to do some fundraising! In the past we
have sold Sheetz Coupons (great stocking stuffers), Gardner's
chocolate covered pretzels, car washes, and various air fresheners.
This is an important part of our club to be able to maintain the
amount events we greatly enjoy.
